Let's take a look at the top ten nations offering digital nomad visas to remote employees in 2023. Individuals who work remotely for an employer or for themselves are known as digital nomads; they are also known as self-employed or freelancers. They only need the internet to stay connected to jobs, employers, coworkers, and clients. Below are the Top 10 countries you would want to consider staying as a digital nomad.
CROATIA
Croatia provides a 12-month digital nomad visa to non-EU or Swiss residents who work remotely as an entrepreneur for their own business or as a freelancer for a foreign corporation. You can apply for a digital nomad visa via the Ministry of Interior of Croatia's English-language website. The Residence Permit, according to their website, permits you to reside in Croatia for 12 months if you can present documentation of a monthly income of 17,822 HRK and a minimum of 213,870 HRK in your bank account.
Expats who work as digital nomads choose to dwell in towns such as Dubrovnik, which served as a filming location for Westeros in Game of Thrones and has subsequently become a big tourist draw since the show debuted in 2011.Other lovely cities, like as Zagreb, Split, and Zadar, have also grown in popularity among expats due to their natural beauty and magical surroundings. Also, to obtain a residence permit, check in at the local police station within three days of your arrival with a lease contract from your landlord, a notarized declaration from the property owner with your name on it, and your biometric card.
SPAIN
In January 2023, Spain will create a digital nomad visa scheme that would allow remote workers and freelancers to live in Spain if they earn at least 2,000 Euros per month. Spain's parliament recently passed the Startups Act, which includes a digital nomad program to stimulate the country's tech industry and international startup investments.
You should be able to submit your digital nomad visa application online by visiting their website. According to the new draft, digital nomad expats would have their income tax cut from 24% to 15% for up to four years if they make less than 600,000 Euros per year. This is likely to compete with neighboring Portugal, which already has its own special visa program for remote employees and freelancers.
Major cities such as Barcelona, Madrid, and Valencia have higher living costs. Most expats prefer to buy property in tiny regional towns that are not too far from large cities but have a reduced cost of living. Because of its culture, food, and breathtaking environment, Spain is a favored destination for many American expats. If you have a lot of money and want to live in Spain for a long time, you can apply for a Golden Visa if you invest 500,000 Euros in real estate.
GREECE
Non-EU citizens working remotely for a company situated outside of Greece or entrepreneurs working for themselves can apply for a digital nomad visa in Greece. The Digital Nomad Visa allows you to stay in the country legally for up to a year, following which you can apply for a Digital Nomad Residence Permit if you want to stay longer. In Greece, digital nomad expats must earn at least 3,500 Euros per month after taxes, 4,200 Euros per month if accompanied by a spouse, and 525 Euros per month for each child.
You can apply for a visa at a Greek consulate near you. Greece also offers a unique income tax break if you commit to staying in the country for at least two years and up to seven years. Some of Greece's most famous tourist locations are Athens, Rhodes, Santorini, and the island of Crete. Most expats opt to reside on the island of Crete because of its calm lifestyle, breathtaking scenery, and wonderful beaches. Greece has been seeking to attract more digital nomads in order to strengthen their economy and GDP and recover what was lost during the 2010 financial crisis, which resulted in a mass flight from the country.
ROMANIA
Romania recently launched a digital nomad visa scheme for non-EU citizens in 2022 in order to enhance its business and GDP. Expats wishing to remain in Romania must provide proof of a monthly income of 3,300 Euros, which is much greater than in other Eastern European nations. You must operate remotely for an employer outside of Romania or earn self-employment income from outside of Romania. You must also provide proof of medical insurance coverage of at least 30,000 Euros, as well as proof of a lease or rental agreement in Romania.
The visa is valid for 12 months and can be extended for another 12 months.
The average cost of living in Romania is 48% lower than in the United States, while the rent is 78% lower. Romania is home to Europe's second-largest subterranean glacier and some of the continent's most spectacular waterfalls. Timisoara, Brasov, Cluj Napoca, and Bucharest, Romania's capital, are among the most popular destinations for digital nomads. Not to add that Romania has the fastest internet speeds in the EU.
LATVIA
Latvia recently created a digital nomad visa program for non-EU remote employees and freelancers to live in Latvia for a period of 12 months, with the option of extending the visa for another 12 months if all requirements are met.
You must show proof of employment with an employer registered in another country for at least 6 months. You cannot work for any Latvian employers, and your monthly income must be at least 2.5 times the average salary, which was 2,900 Euros in 2022 and will likely increase for inflation in 2023. Aside from having one of the fastest internet speeds in Europe, Latvia is well-known for being a beer-loving nation.
It features distinctive cuisine, medieval towns, and waterfalls. Other interesting facts are that Latvian women are the tallest women in the world, and Latvia is said to have been the first nation to set up a Christmas tree in 1510. Latvia established the digital nomad program, most likely in response to the country's dwindling birth rate.
Latvia has lost 30% of its population since the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1990, and it expects to lose another 23% in the future. In order to enhance the tourism economy, the Latvian government is trying to soften its laws for digital nomads. You can visit Latvia without a visa for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
GRENADA
Grenada is a Caribbean country with a large island and several smaller surrounding islands located about 100 miles north of the South American coast. Grenada's GDP has been declining since 2014, with 2020 being the worst year, with a minus 13%. Grenada's economy has switched from agricultural to services, with tourism driving both the top and bottom lines. If you want to live on a Caribbean Island, the Grenada digital nomad visa is worth considering. It has gained the moniker "The Spice Island" due to its abundance of nutmeg, allspice, clove, and cinnamon.
The digital nomad visa in Grenada requires foreigners to earn at least $37,000 per year in order to obtain a one-year stay with the option of extending for another year. Because digital nomads are exempt from paying income tax in Grenada, it's a popular destination for them. In order to enjoy the tax-free lifestyle, you must also provide documentation that your income is earned outside of Grenada. Expats in Grenada enjoy outdoor activities, magnificent beaches, and other amenities.
BRAZIL
Brazil established its digital nomad visa program approximately a year ago, allowing overseas remote workers and freelancers to stay in the country for a year with the option of extending for another year. The cost of living in Brazil can range from $500 to $2,000 per month, depending on where you choose to live. With the Brazilian digital nomad visa, you are also eligible for free public healthcare, which is highly unusual when compared to other nations that provide digital nomad visas.
The majority of foreigners prefer to live in San Paolo, which is concentrated on business and commerce. Currently, the most common nationalities of expats in Brazil are Japanese, Bolivian, Italian, and Argentinian.
To obtain your digital nomad visa, you must show proof of job or self-employment for a foreign company outside of Brazil, as well as a monthly income of $1,400 or $17,000 in your bank account at the time of application. When deciding on a place in Brazil, consider the crime rate, cost of living, infrastructure, and local amenities.
SEYCHELLES
Seychelles is a 115-island archipelago in the Indian Ocean, roughly a three-hour flight from Madagascar. It is one of the world's smallest countries, featuring beautiful beaches and a diverse marine life. The cost of living in Seychelles is around 10% lower than in the United States, with an average rent that is 38% lower. However, if you opt to reside in Victoria, the country's capital city, the cost of living might be significantly greater.
As a digital nomad in Seychelles, you are exempt from paying income or business taxes.
A one-time visa application cost of $45 is required for a one-year stay. To enjoy the tax-free lifestyle, your income and job must be earned outside of Seychelles. You can apply for the Seychelles Workcation Retreat Program if you have enough money in your bank account and a steady monthly income for the duration of your stay. You will not only enjoy spectacular vistas and pleasant weather, but you will also have the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities such as hiking through the rainforests, wandering on lovely beaches, and sampling their unique eateries.
TAIWAN
Taiwan provides a Gold Card that allows freelancers and remote employees to stay and depart the country for up to three years. Despite its geopolitical concerns, numerous Expats voted Taiwan first in terms of quality of life, working overseas, and friendliness. The Gold Card combines a residence visa, work permit, alien resident certificate, and re-entry permission into one document. The Gold Card can cost between $100 and $300, depending on your country and length of stay.
The Taiwan Employment Gold Card requires expats to produce proof of at least $5,700 in monthly income, which is quite high in comparison to other nations that offer digital nomad visas. To obtain the Gold Card, you must also be in a specified profession and have certain industrial certifications. The majority of expats live in or near Taipei, Taiwan's capital city. High-speed internet, nightlife, street cuisine, restaurants, and entertainment are all available. You are not required to pay income tax if you earn your salary outside of Taiwan. If you work for a Taiwanese company, you must pay an 18% income tax or a 20% corporate tax.
THAILAND
Thailand will offer a 10-year digital nomad visa to freelancers and remote workers who want to live in Thailand for the long term beginning in September 2022. The Long-Term Resident Visa, or LTR, permits expats to stay in Thailand for the first five years, with the option of extending for a further five years if they meet the requirements. Applicants for visas must get digital work permits from the Thai Department of Employment for 3,000 Baht per year. Thailand is attempting to relaunch its tourism industry following the significant tourism downturn caused by the COVID-19 epidemic, which contributed approximately 11% of Thailand's GDP.
LTRs are classified into five categories. As a digital nomad, you should apply for the work-from-Thailand Professionals position. You must provide proof of income of at least $80,000 each year for the previous two years. If you made between $40,000 and $80,000 per year in the previous two years, you'd need a master's degree, intellectual property, or series A funding. You must also work for or own a publicly traded company on a stock exchange or a private company that has been in operation for at least three years and has a revenue of at least $50 million each year.
If you don't meet those requirements, you can apply for wealthy global citizens if you have at least a million dollars in total assets, a personal income of at least $80,000 per year in the last two years and invest at least half a million dollars in Thai government bonds, foreign direct investment, or Thai property. Once you have the aforementioned financials you can apply for a Thai Retirement visa, often known as an affluent pensioner visa.
